History of Modell's
Modell’s Sporting Goods is the nation’s oldest family owned and operated retailer of sporting goods, activewear, licensed products, and brand-name athletic footwear.
Modell’s was founded by Morris A. Modell in 1889. Our first store was located in lower Manhattan. Through the years, four generations of the Modell’s Family have worked to develop the business into a chain of over 150 stores. The company is headquartered in Manhattan and has over 4,000 associates throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C.
Mitchell B. Modell is Chief Executive Officer of Modell’s Sporting Goods. In addition to successfully leading Modell’s Sporting Goods into a new era, Mitchell is an illustrious and influential leader in the local and business community. Mitchell is Chairman of the New York City Sports Commission appointed by the Mayor. He serves on the Board for Directors of the Police Athletic League (PAL), NYC & Company (Conventions & Visitors Bureau) and the NRF (National Retail Federation). He also serves on the Jay Baker Retail Advisory Board at the Wharton School of Business, and is a member of the World President’s Organization (WPO), Chief Executive’s Organization (CEO), Friar’s Club, and Association for a Better New York (ABNY) and NYC Partnership. In 2007 Mitchell received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Mitchell grew up in Hewlett, Long Island and graduated from Boston University School of Management.
